Feasibility of mixed nut challenges in children with suspicion of multiple tree nut allergies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background In children without any previous ingestion of nuts multiple sensitization to tree nuts is common. To minimize the risk of accidental reactions, those children are advised to exclude all nuts from their diets. Multiple food challenges would be needed to determine the presence of clinical relevant tree nut allergies, which is practically impossible. A pilot study to determine the feasibility of a mixed nut challenge in children with suspicion of multiple tree nut allergies was performed.

Usefulness of open mixed nut challenges to exclude tree nut allergy in children
BACKGROUND To minimize the risk of accidental reactions, atopic children with multiple sensitizations to tree nuts are advised to avoid all nuts. Multiple food challenges would be needed to confirm the clinical relevance, but are too burdensome to be practical. The usefulness of open mixed nut challenges in terms of safety, reactions during challenge, tolerance of the challenge material, effect...
متن کاملAllergy to Tree Nuts and Edible Seeds
There is not much information on the prevalence of tree nut allergy in populations, and reports vary in the methods of data collection as well as the ages of the study populations. The few reports available indicate that in the United States, an allergy to tree nuts affects about 0.5% of the population.1 In Canada, the number is 1.22%;2 in the United Kingdom, the number varies from 1.4%3 to 2.2...
متن کاملPerception of Shea Nut Tree as an Economic Tree among Farmers in Oyo State, Nigeria
The importance of shea tree to the people of south-western Nigeria cannot be over emphasized considering both the economic and environmental uses of the tree. It would be worthwhile to investigate farmers’ perception of shea nut tree as an economic tree and their attitu...
متن کاملDemographic Predictors of Peanut, Tree Nut, Fish, Shellfish, and Sesame Allergy in Canada
Background. Studies suggest that the rising prevalence of food allergy during recent decades may have stabilized. Although genetics undoubtedly contribute to the emergence of food allergy, it is likely that other factors play a crucial role in mediating such short-term changes. Objective. To identify potential demographic predictors of food allergies. Methods. We performed a cross-Canada, rando...
متن کاملThe use of serum-specific IgE measurements for the diagnosis of peanut, tree nut, and seed allergy.
BACKGROUND The gold standard for diagnosing food allergy is the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge. Diagnostic food-specific IgE levels might assist in diagnosing food allergies and circumventing the need for food challenges. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of food-specific IgE measurements for identifying symptomatic peanut, tree nut, and seed a...
